Toyota Prototype FJ Cruiser
On May 28th, several members of the So-Cal TLCA were invited by the new products division of Toyota USA to visit their headquarters and discuss the prototype FJ Cruiser. The FJ Cruiser was on display in the courtyard at Toyota along with an FJ40, an FJ80 and an FJ25. We spent about an hour climbing all over the cruiser and answering questions about what we would like to see in a new Land Cruiser offering.
Some of the issues we felt were important were:
A reasonable entry level base package that could compete with Jeep and that could be scalable in either an off-road direction or in a comfort direction.
Since the new Cruiser would probably be built on either a 4runner or Tundra base, Toyota should get aftermarket manufacturers involved early so there would be plenty of upgrade components available.
Due to design criteria, the prototype FJ Cruiser had no removeable top. We felt the design would be more desirable as an off-road Land Cruiser if it followed the FJ40 design and came with a removable top and roll bar.
Our main concern was that Toyota make the vehcile tough enough to live up to the tradition of Landcruiser.
